QUEENSBURY, New York (March 9, 2021) — º£½ÇÉçÇø is proud to present upcoming lectures with such varied topics as zombies — yes, zombies — and teaching for digital and virtual learners.

As part of the continuing College Lecture Series, Dr. Adriana Umaña, instructor of Foreign Languages at º£½ÇÉçÇø, will present â€œA Brief History of Zombies: The Forgotten Heroes of the Haitian Revolution,â€ at 12:40 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, via Zoom.

Zombies hold a prevalent place in American pop culture, but few understand the origin of the figures and their connection to the Haitian Revolution of 1791-1804. Umaña will explore the evolution of the zombie from the plantations of 17th-century Saint-Domingue through the Revolution to its 20th-century manifestations in pop culture.

Umaña teaches French and Spanish at º£½ÇÉçÇø. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston and a doctorate from Rice University.

The event is free and open to the public. To request a Zoom link, please email cls@sunyacc.edu.

The final lecture in the Teach for the Future series will be held at 12:40 p.m. Monday, March 29, via Zoom. â€œMaking It Click: How to Create an Instructional Website for Linear Learning,â€presented by Jill Randall, assistant professor of Mathematics, and Krista Rivera, instructor of English.

The series focuses on nurturing teaching skills by exposing educators to modern and innovative practices. Through a grant — funded by Jo-Ann and Michael Rappaport through the º£½ÇÉçÇø Foundation — Rivera and Randall had the opportunity to attend a seminar about post-secondary teaching and learning. Their findings are shared in the Teach for the Future series.

In “Making It Click,â€ Randall and Rivera will demonstrate how Google sites can be used to teach comprehensive lessons as students progress through a series of activities.

The presentation will last about an hour, with time for questions. To request a Zoom link to the virtual presentation, please email cls@sunyacc.edu.
